Pep Guardiola personally sought out Fred in the aftermath of the Manchester derby after the Manchester United midfielder appeared to suffer racial abuse on Saturday afternoon.

The Manchester City manager was seen deep in conversation with the Brazilian in the mixed zone after the game, cupping his face in his hands while speaking to him for 30 seconds.

It’s thought that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss was offering his unconditional support to Fred who was also pelted with an object during United’s 2-1 win at the Etihad.

Fred appeared to be the subject of monkey chants from one supporter in the front row of the crowd, with Manchester City vowing to ban him for life if he is indeed found guilty of racism.

The 26-year-old insists he did not hear any racism from the crowd but wasn’t surprised by the incident.

‘Unfortunately, we are still in a backward society. It is a shame we still have to live with that in 2019,’ he said.

‘Unfortunately, this is happening in some stadiums. It happened here, it happened in Ukraine with some friends.

‘It’s sad, but we have to keep our heads up and forget about that.’

He was shown footage of the fan’s abuse in the Manchester United dressing room and added: ‘Thank God I have a lot of friends here in the locker room who hugged me, like Jesse Lingard. I don’t want to think about it. I just want to move on.

‘We can’t give them any attention because that’s all they want. I spoke to the referee after the match, they will do something about it and that’s all.’
