People are selling unopened Christmas gifts on eBay

If you thought 2020 couldn’t get any weirder, we’re afraid you’re wrong: in the aftermath of Christmas, people are selling their unopened – yes, unopened – gifts on eBay.

While eBay has long been a go-to for flogging unwanted presents, it’s usually a given that you’d at least unwrap them first to find out what’s inside.

But now, listings for fully wrapped gifts – with no indication as to what’s inside – are cropping up all over the online retail platform. And they’re fetching pretty big bids, too.

Some of the gifts are listed on eBay without any explanation as to why they were unopened, while others hint at relationship breakdowns.

One seller writes: ‘It’s a long story, the gifts are from someone I no longer want to be in contact with!

‘Let’s just say crazy person! We now don’t talk but the gifts were given before the fall out!

‘Hope the gifts will be appreciated by someone else as I don’t want them.’

The listing has picked up 26 bids, which currently stand at £50.

Another seller, flogging two unopened gift boxes, explains: ‘Unwanted unopened gift from my EX.

‘I have no idea why they thought it was appropriate to buy me something, I will be sending them this link too!

‘I have no interest in his gift. The box measurements aren’t very big.’

The highest bid for this listing currently stands at £26.

But what if you buy an unopened gift on eBay and are disappointed by what’s inside? Are you entitled to a refund?

eBay will only refund buyers if what they purchase isn’t ‘as described’ – so if you’re buying something that is only described as an unopened present, that’s going to cause you some problems.
