New Year, new you, new job?
If you’re on the hunt for a fresh gig in 2020, there’s a recent job listing that has been attracting attention.
The part-time position is for a nanny in Leeds, but there’s a twist. You won’t be looking after small children, taking them to the park or watching Peppa Pig together.
The ‘child’ you’ll be responsible for is actually an 18-year-old law degree student with a demanding schedule.
So demanding, in fact, that her parent don’t want her to have to focus on anything apart from her studies – including mundane tasks such as doing laundry, cleaning or making her own meals.
The job listing, which was posted by Skin Vitality Medical Clinic (presumably where the girl’s parents work) explains that the nanny will be required to prepare three healthy meals per day, as well as ensure the fridge is always full of healthy snacks and juice.
We have a feeling that regular student foods like pot noodles and beans on toast will be frowned upon. You won’t need to pick up the groceries though – she has a personal driver for that – but you will have to clean and do the laundry.
The nanny ad
The ad, posted on Indeed, reads: ‘Nanny required to cook and clean for my 18yr old daughter who is going to University of Leeds in a demanding first year program – Law.
‘She has a driver who can pick up the groceries and drive her around but someone to ensure she eats well and lives without the stress of laundry, cleaning as her study schedule is very intense. This applicant does not need to be a gourmet chef, simply someone who can ensure my daughter eats three healthy meals a day and the fridge is always full of healthy snacks, juice etc.
‘She is Canadian and she needs someone to cook and clean for her and lives in a two bedroom apartment in Leeds City Centre with a full kitchen and it’s a lovely apartment.
‘The hour requirement and rate can/will be tailored to the appropriate candidate.’
The ad also asks for at least one year’s worth of babysitting experience…
It has been shared on Twitter by a user called Lily and has since gone viral, with over 37,000 likes so far – but not because people are keen for the job.
Instead, it has prompted people to mock the level of luxury demanded by ‘rich people’.

‘Meanwhile half her classmates will be working two jobs to survive,’ one person wrote, to which someone else replied ‘And then actually know how to function as an adult in real life!!!’
Another user made a good point on this: ‘Yeah but when they’re an adult they’ll still have their parents’ money so they don’t need to know how to function.’
‘Wouldn’t it just be easier for the mum to buy her own law firm? Save all the hassle?,’ said someone else.
If being a nanny for a teenager doesn’t appeal, the same parents are also looking for a part-time private chef for their daughter, to cook two to three meals daily, three to four times per week.Admittedly, this is a bit odd – since the nanny is also asked to cook – but perhaps it’s on alternate days?
Not everyone was opposed to the idea of working as a nanny.
A lecturer at Leeds Trinity commented on the Twitter thread with enthusiasm.
‘Wait – you get to live in the city centre apartment?,’ she wrote.
‘And all you have to do is load a Canadian lass up with Greggs sausage rolls and wave a pledge dusters about the place?! Then cover me in maple syrup and call me Alanis – I am in.’
That actually doesn’t sound too bad.
