A pensioner unwittingly caused a massive traffic jam after driving his mobility scooter on a busy Spanish motorway.

The 88-year-old wanted to take the fastest route home and ended up in the Julio Luengo tunnel in Gran Canaria.

A video shared online shows him slowly scooting along in the fast lane with no lights on, causing a huge queue to form behind him. Horns can be heard beeping in the dashcam footage, which shows the pensioner driving at about eight miles per hour.

Spanish newspaper La Provincia said police were called and had to drive behind the pensioner with their lights on to safely escort him out of the tunnel and to help avoid an accident.

Mobility scooters and pedestrians are not allowed in the tunnel.

Gran Canaria council tweeted a reminder that pedestrians can’t pass through the tunnel.

The man said he was unaware he was committing a crime, and police decided not to charge him, according to local reports.

The incident, which happened two weeks ago, caused significant delays.
