Peaky Blinders series five release date announced with Glasgow gang set to take starring role

The release date for series five of Peaky Blinders has been announced as fans eagerly await the return of Tommy Shelby and his crew of gangsters.

In a new photo released ahead of the series, Tommy is seen brooding over a gun and a single bullet.

The dramatic image shows the gangster-turned-MP, played by Cillian Murphy, sitting at a table with his head in his hand.

The image was released as it was confirmed that the popular drama will be back on August 25.

Set in Birmingham, Peaky Blinders follows Thomas, his brother Arthur and aunt Polly.

The Bafta-winning series, which also stars the likes of Tom Hardy, Helen McCrory, Sam Neill and Paul Anderson, has been a hit across the world.

Peaky Blinders’ writers say Glasgow gangs were the ‘hardest’ in the UK in the 1920s and 1930s

The new series will see the introduction of a savage Glasgow gang travelling south of the border to claim territory, the boss of which is based on Billy Fullerton, leader of the notorious ‘Billy Boys’.

The show’s creator Steven Knight said: “Truth be told the Glasgow gangs were pretty much the most feared so I thought it was time we went north of the border.”

Peaky Blinders returns to BBC One at 9pm on Sunday August 25.
