It saw the murderous gang the Billy Boys arrive, and immediately crucify and shoot Bonnie Gold in front of his wounded father.

But as the harrowing scenes played out, some viewers couldn’t help but be distracted by what they saw as atrocious accents.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: “Is this billy boys character Glaswegian? Cause that’s the worst Glaswegian accent I’ve heard.”

Another added: “The leader of the Billy Boys in Peaky Blinders has thee worst Scottish accent in the world never mind Glaswegian.”

A third tweeted: “Episode two was incredible but Jesus Christ that attempt at a Glasgow accent was shocking, didnt think the Billy boys would sound like Glasgow uni students #PeakyBlinders.”

Others were equally unimpressed with another fan of the show writing online: “perhaps find a Scottish actor to play a Scottish character? The accent of the #billyboys on #PeakyBlinders is howling.”

A fellow Peaky viewer tweeted: “Just caught up with the first 2 episodes of @ThePeakyBlinder S05; but come on….. you could have used a Scottish Actor to play Billy Boys Jimmy……. the accent was terrible! As a Glaswegian I’m offended.”

Despite the issues with the gang’s accents, they made a chilling entrance on Monday as they delivered a message to Tommy Shelby in the most savage way imaginable.

The fascist group, who terrorised Catholics in the 20s and 30s, ambushed Aberama and Bonnie in the woods.

Their leader broke Aberama’s shoulder with a shovel before giving boxer Bonnie a beating.

Showing no mercy, he then got his cronies to bind Bonnie to a cross before shooting him from point blank range in front of his distraught father.

The episode ended with an unstable Aberama telling all to Tommy as he confronted him at his home.
