PEAKY Blinders creator Steven Knight and Tom Hardy are teaming up for the BBC’s Great Expectations reboot.
Actor Tom, 42, played Alfie Solomons in the hit BBC drama and is set to work with Steven again on a new adaptation of Charles Dickens classic.
The pair previously co-produced another of the acclaimed authors works with the retelling of A Christmas Carol, which starred Guy Pearce.
Tom will serve as an executive producer on Great Expectations alongside Steven, with the story following an orphan called Pip as he tries to become a gentleman after being gifted with great fortune and moving to London.
Speaking about the new adaptation, Steven said: “Adapting Dickens’ work is a delight. I chose Great Expectations as the next work to bring to the screen not just because of the timeless characters, but also because of the very timely story.
“A story of class mobility and class intransigence, told through an intensely emotional and personal first person narrative.
“As the son of a Blacksmith myself, Pip’s journey from the forge into society is a very special one to me.”
Director of BBC Content Charlotte Moore added: ‘Great Expectations is the second in Steven Knight’s series of Dickens adaptations and the perfect choice given its timely and personal narrative.
“His original take on one of Britain’s most loved classics will make it must-see drama for a whole new generation.”
Great Expectations has been adapted on a number of previous occasions, with the BBC’s last version airing in 2011 and starring Gillian Anderson, Ray Winstone and Douglas Boothe.
A film version was released a year later starring Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Jeremy Irvine.
Meanwhile Tom previously starred in a 2007 retelling of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, playing the villainous Bill Sikes.
