There is a whopping £100,000 bonus on offer at the PDC World Darts Championship, but it will take a player to do something no one has ever done before to claim it.
If any of the 96 players involved at Alexandra Palace can hit two 9-darters over the event then they will take home the huge prize.
If this sounds difficult and unlikely, that is because it is.
There have only been seven 9-darters hit in the history of the PDC World Darts Championship, which dates all the way back to 1994.
There has not been a perfect leg at Alexandra Palace for the last three editions of the World Championship, with Gary Anderson landing the last one on 2 January 2016.
However, PDC chairman Barry Hearn insists that with 47 9-darters hit over the year across PDC events, the goal is achievable.
‘The standard of top-level darts has continued to soar this year and that’s been evident in the record number of nine-darters across the circuit,’ said Hearn.
‘The World Championship is the perfect stage for bringing the best out of players, and this £100,000 bonus for two nine-darters is another huge incentive for a player to make history at Ally Pally.’
There have been multiple 9-darters in World Championships before, but never by the same player.
At the 2012 World Championship Dean Winstanley and Michael van Gerwen both hit perfect legs, with MVG going within one arrow of back-to-back 9-darters in a famous contest with James Wade.
The following year Terry Jenkins and Kyle Anderson also hit 9-darters in the same tournament, but it has not happened since.
While there have been plenty of 9-darters in the PDC this year, they have nearly all come away from the big stage and the television cameras.
There has been just one televised 9-darter in 2019, which Van Gerwen hit against Adrian Lewis at the recent Players Championship Finals.
So will two from one player happen at the Worlds? Almost certainly not.
