Paul Scholes believes Liverpool’s failure to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford will cost Jurgen Klopp the Premier League title.

Title-chasing Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at the Theatre of Dreams in February by a United side that was ravaged by injuries.

The Red Devils were without a number of key players for the clash and then used all their substitutions in the first 25 minutes due to three first-half injuries.

But Liverpool were unable to capitalise on the day and, with two matches remaining, find themselves one point behind defending champions Manchester City.

City are unlikely to slip up with fixtures against Leicester and Brighton to come and Scholes believes Liverpool’s goalless draw with United could prove to be the pivotal moment of the season.

‘What these two teams have done, right through the season, has been sensational,’ the former Manchester United and England midfielder told Premier League Productions.

‘I won’t feel sorry for either of them… But you’ve got to admire what they’ve done.

‘When you look back, Liverpool’s biggest mistake was not beating Manchester United at Old Trafford.

‘When you see how many players United were missing… they then had three injuries. Lingard came on and had to go off.

‘Liverpool were really poor that day and you saw the difference the other night when City came to Old Trafford and were dominant and looked a really top team.

‘Liverpool, ironically, could have lost the title at Old Trafford.’

Manchester City returned to the top of the league on Sunday with a narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley.

Following the match, manager Pep Guardiola reflected on what has been an ‘incredible’ title race.

He said: ‘Maybe one team will again make 100 points in a season, but for the second one to make 92, 95, 98, it will not happen.

‘In two seasons we have 192 points. We have more than 20 points on United and Arsenal and Tottenham, it is incredible.

‘I could not expect that [at the] start of season or especially in winter time. We have won 12 games in a row. It is incredible.’
