Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has picked Peter Schmeichel over David De Gea and Edwin Van Der Sar as the best goalkeeper he played with at Old Trafford.
The Dane spent eight trophy-laden years at the club before joining Sporting Lisbon in 1999 following the club’s Treble in the 1998/99 season.
Scholes was only in the early stages of his career when Schmeichel was at his peak and United struggled to replace the Dane for six years after his departure.
That gap was eventually filled by Van Der Sar in 2005 and the Dutchman helped United to reach three Champions League finals in his six years at Old Trafford.
De Gea replaced the Dutchman and has gone on to become the finest goalkeeper in the world but Scholes says Schmeichel remains the best he played with.
‘I think Peter Schmeichel was the best [goalkeeper he’s played with],’ Scholes told the United Podcast.
‘I always judge it on who’s the hardest to score against and Peter Schmeichel was friggin’ massive.
‘He was enormous. Almost impossible to score against.’
Scholes was speaking on a United podcast alongside current star Marcus Rashford.
Despite being widely acclaimed as one of the finest players of his generation, Scholes was often mocked for his lack of expertise when it came to tackling.
However, the United legend insists he was a good tackler and that any mistimed challenges were purposeful.
‘I was fairly good at tackling. It was all calculated,’ said Scholes.
‘I was just getting people back. That’s all I was doing! I never instigated. If someone got me, there’s a chance I’d get them back’.
