Paul O'Grady in health update as he quits alcohol after 3 heart attacks: 'I’m a timebomb'

Paul O’Grady has spoken candidly about his health scares, saying he has now given up alcohol. The For the Love of Dogs presenter has suffered from three heart attacks, kidney failure and a coronavirus scare.

The 65-year-old is self-isolating on his Kent farm and in a new interview admitted why he has said bye bye to booze.

The Lily Savage favourite admitted he has had one hangover too many, after a number of health scares.

Paul lost both his parents to heart issues and said he himself is a “timebomb”.

The entertainer was struck down with heart attacks in 2002, 2006 and six years ago.

Speaking about his lifestyle change, he told The Sun: “I’ve just sort of gone off booze. I didn’t even have a drink on my birthday last month.

“It’s not like the old days when I could neck ten pints of cider — now I’d be ill as a dog. The hangovers aren’t worth it.”

Paul claimed when you’re over 60 years of age you can “forget it” when it came to drinking.

“You have ‘do not resuscitate’ around your neck when you go to bed because you know what you’ll be like the next day,” he stated.

“I realise now I’d be too scared, too chicken. I’d be sitting there necking the drink they give you and changing my mind halfway through, saying, ‘I want to go home’.”

More recently, in 2017, Paul was hospitalised in India with kidney issues but he is now back to “full strength”.

He had been filming for the ITV show at the time, when he contracted a near fatal virus.

Speaking to the Mirror just months after, he recalled: “They said to me, ‘Keep off the streets, it’s Delhi’.
