Manchester United should be looking to sign ‘top quality players’ like Callum Hudson-Odoi and Jadon Sancho this summer, according to Paul Merson.

After a bright start to his managerial career at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is suffering a difficult period, with United failing to win any of their last three league fixtures.

The poor run – which also saw the Red Devils exit the Champions League and FA Cup – leaves Solskjaer’s side sixth in the Premier League with two matches remaining.

The Manchester club have been linked with a number of high-profile players ahead of the summer transfer window and Solskjaer is keen to bolster his squad.

And Arsenal hero Merson believes United should be looking at Chelsea’s Hudson-Odoi and Borussia Dortmund’s Sancho.

Merson told Sky Sports: ‘They need to bring in top quality players.

‘They could say to Ole: “You’ve got four years here now, get some youngsters in like a Callum Hudson-Odoi or a Jadon Sancho.”

Hudson-Odoi, 18, impressed earlier in the year before suffering a season-ending injury against Burnley. Sancho has had a hand in 25 goals for Dortmund this term.

‘Players who are enthusiastic, who’ve got pace and energy and play like the old Manchester United did.’

Sunday’s draw with Chelsea leaves United with only a slim chance of making the top four, with fourth-placed Chelsea three points ahead in the table.

And Merson says Manchester United’s run of form has been ’embarrassing’ and ‘cringeworthy’.

He added: ‘I’m watching them now and honestly, it’s cringeworthy, it’s embarrassing. It’s embarrassing.

‘Manchester United have to get into the Champions League.

‘Players will be looking at this and thinking they are a million miles behind Manchester City and Liverpool, who are their arch-rivals.

‘If you look at Jose Mourinho at the end it was a relief that he left because he probably thought: “How he was going to close the gap?” Mourinho would have looked at Liverpool rising too.

‘In my opinion United are the biggest club in the world, but if they came in for me and I was a top drawer player but I could go other places, I would seriously be looking and thinking: “Would I want to come here? Are we ever going to get near City or Liverpool?”‘
