Paul Merson believes Manchester United must go on a spending spree over ‘the next four or five windows’ to catch up with Manchester City and Liverpool, beginning with a move for Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils registered a strong interest in Sancho, 19, this summer and were ready to smash their transfer record for the England forward, but Dortmund refused to do business with the Premier League giants.

Earlier this month, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed that United failed with a move for Sancho and claimed the winger had ‘no intention’ of forcing through a switch to Old Trafford.

Despite their failed approach, United remain keen on Sancho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it clear that the youngster remains the club’s number one attacking target.

Arsenal legend Merson agrees that United should prioritise signing Sancho before scouring the market for the world’s top talent in order to make ground on rivals City and Liverpool.

‘They’ve fallen, they’ve come a long way but when they are falling the other teams like Manchester City and Liverpool are so much better than before, it’s frightening,’ he told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

‘I think Manchester United have got to get a big meeting together. Get all the scouts from around the world, because they must have loads.

‘They’ve got to say for the next four or five windows, we’ve got to get the best players. Go and get Sancho, then go and get someone else.’

Sancho has refused to rule out a move away from Dortmund at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

‘I can’t tell the future. I just take it game by game. I just wanna give 100 per cent for Borussia Dortmund,’ the teenager told Viasport.

‘I really want to do well with Dortmund. Obviously, I want to win titles and give everything.

‘It’s crazy. Everything has come so fast but I have a great team. They keep me humbled.

‘I just take it game by game and give 100 per cent.’
