Paul Merson believes Bruno Fernandes will prove to be a good signing for Manchester United, but thinks Odion Ighalo is a gamble.

Both players arrived at Old Trafford in January, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeing his squad bolstered for the rest of the season.

And former Arsenal midfielder Merson gave his verdict on their recruitment in the January transfer window.

‘You hear stuff. I don’t watch Portuguese football if I’m being honest,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘What you hear from the Wolves lads – Neves yesterday – everybody talks very highly of him.

‘He goes box to box… I think he’ll be alright. Manchester United had to start somewhere, they’ve got no guile in midfield.

‘If you watch Manchester United play, it’s all the same. Their best player at doing that is probably Mata who is coming towards the end of his career.

‘So for me they had to start somewhere. I think he’s a good signing.

On Ighalo, he added: ‘The other one I think is a massive gamble. Solskjaer could come out and we could all be sitting here in six weeks saying, “Wow. Where did you see that?”

‘Or this lad could run on the pitch and we could say, “Oh my God. What’s happened here?”

‘You feel for Mason [Greenwood] but on the other hand I’m relieved for him. He’s going to be a proper player but you don’t want to be putting him into a massive club like United in a poor team at the moment.

‘He will only suffer. He needs to come into this team when they’re doing well and players are looking after him rather than themselves.

‘At the moment a lot of these players are looking after their own game. So for me, it probably helps him.

‘But you’d like to think next season they won’t go out and pay £70m, £80m, £90m for a forward if they think that well of Greenwood.’
