Paul Gascoigne filmed in Benidorm singing along to 'f*** the Pope and the IRA' chant

Paul Gascoigne has caused yet more controversy after footage emerged of him singing a sectarian slur while on holiday in Benidorm.

‘Gazza’, who has been battling drink and alcohol problems for years, played for Protestant-supporting Rangers between 1995-1998, and landed himself in trouble by miming playing a flute during a game against Celtic, a gesture which is symbolic of the flute-playing of the Orange Order marchers.

And he has appeared to mock Celtic again by joining in with fans who sang an adaption of the Tina Turner classic Simply the Best.

In the video, which was uploaded to Facebook by Ibrox Bar Benidorm, Gascoigne is clearly seen joining in and mouthing along with the altered lyrics that include the line “F*** the Pope and the IRA.”

Gascoigne can be seen singing along

It is not the first time the ex-England international has landed himself in hot water with the song, and he chanted the same lyics during an event in Alloa in September and in Ayrshire in 2016.

Gascoigne’s trip to Benidorm, organised by his manager Shane Whitfield, has been criticised by some, with many questioning the benefit of a trip to a destination which is so associated with vibrant nightlife, although in the video Gascoigne can be seen sipping from a bottle of water.

He has also posted pictures of his holiday which show him riding a jet-ski and playing golf.

Gascoigne was a popular figure at Rangers

He is due to appear at another event called ‘An Evening with Paul Gascoigne’ at the four-star Marina Hotel on Tuesday.

Gascoigne has had a tough time since he retired from football in 2005, and was arrested last year and charged with sexual assault after an incident on a train from York to Durham.

He was widely regarded as the most talented player of his generation and also played for the likes of Tottenham , Newcastle and Lazio.
