But Gascoigne has revealed he felt sorry for the new St James’ Park chief – saying he looked a “wreck” during the match.

Gazza claimed: “I felt sorry for Steve. He was a nervous wreck in those last 20 minutes.

“I saw his face at the final whistle and thought he was going to break down and cry. You shouldn’t see him like that.

“Even he looked shocked that they won. But it was vital to get that first win.”

Meanwhile, Gazza has urged Gareth Southgate to call up in-form Leicester star James Maddison today.

MADD NOT TO

The England legend believes the Foxes midfielder, 22, can open defences like Jack Wilshere and Joe Cole in their prime.

He said: “I have been to a few Leicester games and Maddison is a good player. He wants to be on the ball all the time.

“You look at some others who just want to go sideways all the time. Someone like Maddison wants to get on the ball and create.

“He’s like Jack Wilshere a while back or Joe Cole before that.

“You rarely see anybody taking on players. They are frightened in case they lose the ball.

“But Maddison isn’t like that. He’s a good player but you need players around him, guys he can supply with the ball.

“He would have Harry Kane with England just as he has Jamie Vardy at Leicester.”
