Patrick Vieira lifts lid on talks with Arsenal over manager's job


Patrick Vieira has revealed that he has previously held talks over the manager’s job at Arsenal , but insisted that he is happy at Nice.

The former Gunners’ midfielder, who spent nine seasons with the North London club, is currently in his second year with the French side.

He has been linked with the Arsenal job on several occasions in recent years, and the 43-year-old confirmed that he held talks about replacing Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium shortly before he took charge of of the Ligue 1 club in 2018.

In an interview with The Daily Mail , he said: “It was just a conversation about my situation, where I am, what is the next step. Nothing came of it.”

He was linked with the position once again after Unai Emery was sacked in November before Mikel Arteta was appointed the following month.

Although he said he was not approached over the role, the former New York City FC boss insisted that he is fully focused on his current job at Nice and remains excited by French club’s project.

Asked if he also held discussions following Emery’s departure, Vieira added: “No, but there is no place in my mind to have those kind of conversations.

“My focus is here. This project suits who I am and what I want to achieve. This rumour about the Arsenal job is not something that bothered me.

“I don’t know what the future holds but that is why I don’t want to put my brain somewhere that doesn’t exist.

After finishing seventh in Vieira’s debut campaign, Nice are currently 11th in Ligue 1 ahead of their next league game against third-placed Rennes on January 24.

Victory in that game would see them close the gap on their rivals to just five points.
