geometric patterns and rounded shapes decorate the asymmetric interiors of ‘wonder galaxy’, a retro-futuristic dressing room by the madrid-based patricia bustos studio. inspired by austin powers, the space hopes to evoke a ‘childhood energy’ with its use of color and dream-like elements.

the dressing room is drenched in pastel shades and neon hues with lighting playing a fundamental part in creating an other-worldly feel. patricia bustos uses smart lightbulbs and philips’ hue application to set up scenes of changing light that interact with the various textures and shapes.
the space is characterized by layered alcoves and tiled mosaics. meanwhile, iridescent and mirrored surfaces expand the interior to create a feeling of infinite depth.
the lined methacrylates of the windows are colour degraded to produce light and shadow effects that contrast with the thin and totally matt tiles decorating the walls. these various gresite tiles, made of recycled glass from spanish brand hisbalit, work to create a pixilation effect that gives visitors the impression they have stepped into a video game.
a ceiling lamp is made up of an arrangement of bubbles that convey a lightness whilst referencing zero-gravity in space. elsewhere pyramid lighting elements made of brushed brass and iridescent methacrylate is reminiscent of retro puzzle video games.
all furniture and accessories have been made specifically for the project including the ‘bubble gum’ sofa and the ‘spaceship’ sinks. echoing the use of brass and curved shapes, a set of bespoke shelves are fitted into the rib-like structure of the interior.
the project is part of this year’s casa dècor, madrid’s popular design event, now in its 54th edition. conceived as a platform to showcase emerging trends in interior design, the event sees the transformation of a different location in the center of the city. this year’s edition took place from january 24 to march 10 in a 1930s mansion in the upscale neighbourhood of salamanca. patricia bustos’ ‘futuristic childhood revival’ was conceived as the mansion’s dressing room.
