Former Manchester United captain Patrice Evra has confirmed he’s in talks to return to the club.

The Frenchman retired in May after a trophy-laden career, which included eight years at Old Trafford.

Evra was spotted with Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, at a number of matches last season and has recently been back at the club’s training ground to do his coaching badges.

Woodward confirmed last year that he wanted to appoint a Director of Football and Metro.co.uk understands the likes of Darren Fletcher and Edwin van Der Sar have been considered for the role.

But, speaking on Monday Night Football, Evra has confirmed that he’s held talks ‘behind the scenes’ over a role for him at the club, though he stopped short of specifying the nature of the job.

‘I retired five months ago and I thought maybe I will now enjoy my life but no, I’m doing my coaching badges with Manchester United,’ said Evra.

‘But I want to make it clear because some people think i’m already working for United but no, there’s been some talks. But at the moment I’m only doing my badges. I know everyone is excited to see me back at the club.’

Jamie Carragher then raised an Instagram post from Evra after a recent United defeat and jokingly asked if the former France captain hadn’t already taken his role.

But Evra insisted that the talks are still at a preliminary stage.

‘It’s about that [the club], said Evra.

‘I’m having some important talks behind the scenes and we’ll decide whether I will work for the club in a certain role or not we’ll see.

‘We don’t know yet I want to do erverything but in life you can’t do everything but a role where I can get my hands dirty.

‘If i come back to the club it’s not just to put my face on it it’s to make sure that the club is going back to being the best club in the world. As a player I sacrificed my life to succeed at this club. I don’t know which role I have but I will do the same.’
