Passengers trapped in lift on Carnival Cruises ship are kicked off and banned for life after they ‘damaged it while trying to get out’

SIX passengers who were trapped in the lift of a Carnival Cruises ship for 45 minutes saw their holiday go from bad to worse after they were kicked off the vessel when they eventually got out.

The cruise line claimed that they had damaged the lift while inside, and that they would be banned for life from the cruise line and would have to pay damages.

The incident took place during a cruise last Wednesday.

Passenger Jacob Burrola, who posted viral videos of his ordeal, claimed he was travelling with his brothers Daniel Burrola and Brendon Burrola when the elevator line snapped.

It meant that they were trapped in a lift with fellow passengers Travis Lee, Eric Kim and Michael Huynh and unable to get out.

On his Facebook, Jacob wrote: “Carnival Cruise Elevator Line snaps while crew members mock passengers and take video, meanwhile passenger faints inside.

“Crew tells passengers another 45minutes won’t kill anyone after being stuck for over an hour with sick passengers on board.”

In a video accompany the post, one of the trapped passengers can be heard saying, “That does not sound good” while the lift groaned, before asking the crew to open the door.

The group were also heard negotiating with the crew, suggesting that they may be able to open the door from the inside.

In a separate video, a crew member can be heard telling the group that they won’t “die” if they were stuck in the lift for a bit longer, before one of the trapped passengers said: “How do you know? You’re not in here.”

The group were eventually freed but were then given a printed notice from Carnival, which informed them that they would be kicked off the cruise and banned from future sailings with the company.

It said: “This letter will confirm your discussion with Carnival Cruise Line (‘Carnival Inspiration’) personnel where you were informed that you will be disembarked from the vessel and not permitted to sail on board any Carnival Cruise Line vessel in the future.

“This decision was based on your actions on the current cruise, which were a violation of the ship rules.

“Interfered with the safety and/or enjoyment of other guests on the ship of caused harm to Carnival.

“Your attempt to book a future cruise will result in cancellation and a possible loss of deposit monies.

“You will be responsible for all travel expenses incurred and an invoice will be sent to your home address for payment.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.”

A Carnival Cruise spokesperson told Sun Online Travel that there are “always two sides to every story”.

They said: “We had a group of guests stuck in one of our elevators last week for approximately 30-40 minutes. Our on board team was summoned to provide assistance.

“Unfortunately, because of the extensive damage to the elevator doors and cabling caused by the guests, the work took longer than expected.”

Social media users were conflicted as to who was to blame, with some saying “no guest can be at fault for breaking an elevator”.

However, others felt the cruise liner were not to blame: “I’m sure it was all fun [and] games for this group until they did something stupid and got stuck.”

Last month, British tourists were dramatically rescued from a cruise ship after a terrifying ordeal at sea.

The Viking Cruise ship was sailing during bad weather when the engines cut out, leading passengers stranded at sea.

Norwegian Cruise passengers also faced stormy weather last month which left the ship with broken glass and damaged furniture.
