It’s a proud day for many a family and, after the long weeks of the summer holidays , a welcome relief.
So of course parents want to immortalise their child’s first day or return to school with some photos. After all, it’s as pristine as their uniform is going to get.
But security experts are asking parents to think twice before taking part in this right of passage.
At least, when it comes to sharing them online.
Experts have warned parents against sharing first day of school photos across their social media accounts, as a staggering 30 percent of their online profiles are public – so anyone can see what they post.
In a study carried out by McAfee, it was revealed that over half of parents who took part were afraid about paedophiles accessing images of their kids.
35 percent expressed their worry about kidnapping.
Chief scientist and Fellow at McAfee, Raj Samani, said:
“Before proud parents share their children’s ‘first day’ photos on social media, they must consider the potential consequences of what they post.”
He added: “These sorts of images can be used to gather personal information such as school, location, a child’s full name, or even birth dates to paint a picture of who they are.”
