Parents 'freak out' over mum's lunch box for 'really picky' daughter

A woman who shared a picture of her daughter’s packed lunch has been heavily criticised by fellow parents.

The picture shared on social media shows the lunch the mum packed for her two-and-a-half year old.

She said she was looking for new ideas on what to feed her daughter since she’s “really picky”.

The lunch box was filled with tomatoes and cucumbers, popcorn, salt-free pretzels, gherkins, as well as both jam and meat sandwiches, pizza sticks and rice cakes.

But the mum received a number of complaints about some of the food that she’d packed being a choking hazard.

Parents were concerned about the grapes and tomatoes

Her post to a Facebook group for packed lunches had one parent saying: “I just freak out when I see whole grapes,” adding she “just wouldn’t take the chance” reported news.com.au.

Another added: “Looks great! Just a heads up for next time, anything shaped like grapes, cherry tomatoes, etc should be quartered lengthwise. Whole grapes are the perfect size to get stuck in kiddo’s windpipes!”

But the mum clearly didn’t find the advice from the fellow parent – who was apparently just trying to spread information on how to keep their kids safe and healthy – very helpful as she replied with laughing emojis.

A third also said she’d wait until her daughter was older to offer them at all.

But one woman rushed to defend her as they said that their kids wouldn’t eat cut grapes as her daughter often complained about the slimy texture.

Undeterred by the criticism about the grapes and tomatoes she added: “No, I don’t need to cut those in half”, alongside a tongue out emoji.

Advice on the NHS website agrees that babies can easily choke on grapes so they should be cut lengthways.

It reads: “Once your baby has started on solid food, always cut it up into small pieces.

“Babies can choke on something as small as a grape (these should be cut lengthways).”
