Paperclipping is the new dating trend that sums up every Tinder experience you've had

Ghosting, Scrooging, Kondo-ing, breadcrumbing – we’ve seen every dating trend under the sun. And just when you thought the internet had run out of names for short version: someone fobbing you off, we’re introducing a new guy in town – paperclipping.

We’ve all been on one of those dates where you think it went ok-ish, maybe they’re not husband/wife material, but when you’re in a mid-twenties crisis – they’ll do. They seem really keen, and perhaps even pass comment of hanging out again.

Then, out of the blue, you’ll get ghosted. A common occurrence.

BUT, it doesn’t stop here. You get on with your life, make many more mistakes with many more strangers, and then a few months later, you’re greeted with a WhatsApp messages along the lines of “hey, how’s it going?”

Congratulations, you’ve been paperclipped.

The term is inspired by Instagram artist, Samantha Rothenberg, who frequently posts about the turmoils of millennial dating, with one of her recent works featuring Clippy, the annoying digital assistant belonging to Microsoft Office back in the day – which is exactly who inspired the new trend for his ability to pop up out of nowhere when frankly, you didn’t ask.

In the post, Rothenberg captioned the image which now has over 14,000 likes: “Who remembers Clippy? Well he’s here to make sure you don’t forget him.” and was met with a flourish of (lets face it, mostly women) in the comments screaming “OH MY GOD YAAASS EVERY GUY EVER” – comforting to know it’s not just us then.

In true Clippy fashion, popping up out of nowhere to offer unsolicited, annoying advice for no other reason than to remind you they exist are key traits of any paper-clipper, before you attempt to strike up conversation and they mysteriously vanish for another six months again.

Yeah, we’ll give this one a hard pass, thanks.
