'Paperclipping' is the latest frustrating dating trend you need to know about

If you’ve ever checked your phone to see a random message from someone you’ve dated who previously ghosted you, then you’ve been ‘paperclipped’.

‘Paperclipping’ is the latest dating trend to be given an official name, following the likes of ‘Kondo-ing’, ‘Masturdating’ and ‘Fishing’.

The bizarre term was recently coined by Metro and was inspired by the artwork of Samantha Rothenberg, who posts on Instagram under the name of VioletClair.

Rothenberg frequently shares illustrations online showcasing the ups and downs of dating in 2019 and one of her recent pieces features Clippy, the annoying digital assistant belonging to Microsoft Office – remember him?

The latest dating trend is inspired by Clippy, the Microsoft Office assistant

In her drawing she reminded people of how Clippy was always popping up, unannounced and unwanted to offer advice on how to use Word.

She compares Clippy to certain people in the dating world today, who do the same – pop up in your life, for absolutely no reason other than to remind you they exist.

Months after you last saw them, they’ll drop you a casual “How’re you doing?” text message, before mysteriously vanishing again.

Like, can you just not?!

Rothenberg’s illustration, which has garnered more than 14,000 likes, features three paperclips, each saying something.

One speech bubble reads: “Sometimes I pop up for no reason at all. Like now.”

The second says: “See the truth is, I’m damaged, flaky and not particularly interested in you.”

The third adds: “But I don’t want you to forget I exist.”

She captioned the post, writing: “Who remembers Clippy? Well he’s here to make sure you don’t forget him.”

Hundreds also took the time to comment on her post, with many finding it incredibly relatable.

“Oh wow Clippy is my entire friend group from high school lol,” wrote one user.

Another replied: “This is so awesome! Clippy was totally annoying! Girls! Keep Clippy away!”

Someone else wrote: “Sounds like a couple of my exes.”

“Every man ever,” added a fourth person.
