Pablo Mari has flown back to Brazil “disappointed” as transfer negotiations between Arsenal and Flamengo broke down, according to reports.
But the deal for the defender to join the north London side isn’t dead in the water just yet.
Mari travelled to the UK over the weekend, where he held talks to join Arsenal.
The deal was expected to be confirmed imminently before it was then revealed that the defender was no longer in London, and had instead flown back to Brazil.
The Daily Mail reported that the transfer was at risk of collapsing as a result, which would be a huge blow for the Gunners, who are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.
But football.london claims that while the centre-back has left the UK for Brazil, that the plan was always for him to go back to Rio de Janeiro for the time being.
Flamengo are looking for Mari to complete a permanent transfer to Arsenal. The Gunners, who aren’t blessed with huge funds, favour a loan deal.
Arteta has been relatively tight-lipped on Arsenal’s transfer plans this January.
He said: “I’m not going to be discussing any transfer links publicly. It’s something we are trying to do internally and when we have news we will communicate with you guys.
“We are looking at different positions, obviously since I joined we lost Calum [Chambers] and we had other circumstances and injuries in that position so it’s true that at the back we have been short.
“There are other positions as well, depending on what happens in the market that we might need to assess.”
