Ozark season 3: Was Helen Pierce's fate teased from this scene?

Netflix recently dropped 10 new episodes of Ozark for fans to binge. The show picked up six months after the last outing with the Byrde family very much with their hands tied by the Mexican Cartel run by Omar Navarro (played by Felix Solis). Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) continued to pull the strings and doled out orders to Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney).

However, Helen had a surprising turn in her story arc in season three after she was killed off by the cartel.

Helen was introduced in season two and was very much an antagonist, who was instructing the couple on behalf of her client.

In season two, Marty tried to resist the demands of the cartel and formulated plans to run away.

At the last minute, Wendy took decisive action and struck a Faustian pact with Helen as they decided to stay in the Ozarks.

Season three saw Wendy becoming a major player as she spoke directly to Navarro and tried to prove her loyalty to him.

Wendy even had her brother Ben Davis (Tom Pelphrey) assassinated after he appeared to be a liability to the family.

By the end of the third outing, Wendy seemed to have convinced Navarro of her loyalty after his men shot Helen dead.

Marty and Wendy were covered in Helen’s blood and were in shock after witnessing her unexpected and cold-blooded execution right in front of their eyes.

However, this torture scene alone was an ominous hint of what was in store of the attorney.

To subject a previously highly regarded member of staff to such an extreme interrogation hinted at the huge breakdown of trust between the two sides.

Navarro’s trust in Helen had been waning through season three as he spoke more to Wendy.

Indeed, Helen’s plans to take over Byrde Enterprises were scuppered at the last moment by her demise.

Perhaps Navarro chose Wendy over Helen because her whole family was in on their devious criminal activities.

Wendy had also done what was necessary to secure her family’s future as well as Navarro’s children via a legitimate trust fund she set up for them.

A possible season four is likely to shed light on why Navarro decided to deal directly with the Byrdes over Helen.

The lawyer’s death could also have implications on the Byrdes with the FBI sniffing around their casino.

Ozark season 1 to 3 are streaming on Netflix now
