Former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring a top-class centre-back and midfielder to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.
Solskjaer has reportedly been promised a £250million warchest to spend on reinforcements ahead of the 2019/20 campaign and several high-profile names have been linked with the Red Devils.
While Young England forwards Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi are among United’s top targets, Hargreaves believes the club must prioritise signing a quality central defender.
He has also urged Solskjaer to go after a defensive midfielder in the mould of N’Golo Kante to play alongside Paul Pogba.
‘They need a world class centre-back, that’s for sure,’ Hargreaves told BT Sport following United’s 2-1 win over Watford.
‘And they need somebody alongside Pogba like Kante like they have with France.
‘They need someone in that mould to play next to Pogba.’
England and Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle agreed with Hargreaves that United need to sign a centre-half and a midfielder.
‘I think a centre-back would be the number one target,’ Hoddle added.
‘I think they’ve got enough firepower to score goals and if Pogba keeps playing like he is then you’ve got a talisman that can open doors and create and score goals himself.
‘Perhaps under Mourinho you were thinking they need another midfielder like that, but he’s there. All that’s coming out of him.
‘The French player that we see playing for France… he’s now doing that in a red shirt.’
