OverActive Media Adds Hospitality Entrepreneur David Grutman as Investor

  • David Grutman, who owns and operates nightclubs and restaurants in Miami, has joined the OverActive Media investor group.
  • OverActive Media owns Splyce and the Toronto Defiant, the latter of which must establish a home venue for the 2020 Overwatch League season.
  • Grutman’s addition comes soon after that of musician Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye.

David Grutman, a hospitality entrepreneur with several nightclubs and restaurants in Miami, has joined Toronto Defiant and Splyce Database-Link-e1521645463907 parent company OverActive Media Database-Link-e1521645463907 (OAM) as its latest investor.

Grutman, the founder and CEO of Groot Hospitality, operates Miami nightclubs such as LIV and Story, along with restaurants such as Komodo and Planta South Beach. Groot Hospitality also has a LIV location at the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium.

The Toronto Defiant must establish a venue in its home market for the 2020 season, as all Overwatch League Database-Link-e1521645463907 teams will begin hosting home games then. OAM may be able to leverage Grutman’s experience in that arena, although the company did not provide any specific details when asked.

“David Grutman is an active and enthusiastic OAM shareholder, with expertise and contacts across our core demographic, and other audiences we are aiming to reach,” Paulo Senra, OAM’s vice president of content and communications told The Esports Observer. “His knowledge and advice will be instrumental to us as we continue to grow out one of the leading esports organizations globally.”

Grutman is the second high-profile investor to join the OAM investor group in April, following the recent announcement of musician Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. The company has raised more than $43M USD across two funding rounds since last fall.
