Outlander really ramped up the drama in the latter half of season four and fans where left on tenterhooks wondering how all the storylines were going to tie together by the time the the finale exploded onto screens.
The biggest surprise came throughout from Roger (played by Richard Rankin) and Brianna’s (Sophie Skelton) changing relationship.
Their initial reunion was one of the most romantic moments in the series, but it quickly turned to horror when Brianna realised her new husband had betrayed her in hiding the truth about her parents’ house fire in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The red-headed Bostonian was then raped by evil villain Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) in devastating scenes, and in a terrible case of mistaken identity her father Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) assumed the culprit was Roger.
The couple spent the rest of the season apart and Brianna gave birth to her new baby alone – an infant whom could be Stephen or Roger’s – but all was rectified in a dramatic reunion.
But the Scottish historian struggled over his feelings, and for a brief period decided to travel back through the Standing Stones.
Luckily Roger changed his mind at the last minute, and agreed to raise Brianna’s baby as his own regardless of his parentage, but there will undoubtedly be struggles ahead.
According to American site FOX News, actor Richard recently spoke to them about what’s to come in season five, and the relationship may not evolve how viewers expect.
The publication reported the star said had already read some of the scripts ahead of setting off back up to the set in Glasgow, Scotland.
According to the site, Richard also enthused about the direction “of the season so far”.
The actor also revealed he loves “how his character will evolve as a new husband and father” on the period romantic drama.
What’s more, fans may be excited to learn the actor is keen to branch out into other areas of filmmaking, and hope he can explore these avenues during his time on Outlander.
FOX News said the Roger star would “love to explore moving behind the camera in a director of photography or a cinematographer position”.
“I’m always getting involved with other departments on set to see what everyone’s doing and how it all works,” Richard explained.
While fans are waiting to discover whether Brianna can forgive her beau for questioning whether to stay in the past with his wife and new baby, the real problem may be in the form of Highland warrior-turned diplomat Jamie.
Having only had the opportunity to bond with his daughter for the first time last season, Jamie is understandably incredibly protective of her.
When he sees Roger considering whether to commit to Brianna, Jamie struggles to accept Roger, and this will undoubtedly carry on into season five.
But will Jamie be able to forgive the father to his first grandchild? Or will the pair be at loggerheads forever?
Outlander season five is expected to return to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video later this year.
