Season four of Outlander saw the writers focus on Brianna Randall Fraser’s (played by Sophie Skelton) harrowing and poignant journey as she travelled back in time to search for her mother Claire (Caitriona Balfe).
There she was reunited with her lover Roger Wakefield MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and met her biological father Jamie (Sam Heughan) for the first time.
But her plans for happiness were thwarted when she was raped by evil pirate Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) while searching for her mother.
The series focused on Brianna and Roger’s journey and Claire and Jamie’s story was put on the back burner – as for the first time in the series the couple managed to live without any huge dramas.
Yet that looks to be all set to change in season five of the time-travelling epic.
New pictures shared by the Evening Times show Caitriona Balfe sporting her signature blow-dried hair bob from the 1960s, and some dramatic eye make-up to complete the throwback look.
The actress can also be seen dressed in a cream trench coat not dissimilar to the one she wore in some of her season three scenes.
And what’s more, Claire appears to be driving a vintage American car – adding even more fuel to the fire that Claire ends up travelling back through time in season five.
Another option could be that the show delves into another issue facing the couple by doing flashbacks into the 20 years Claire and Jamie were apart on the fan-favourite drama.

Either way, given Claire and Jamie were mostly happy and in a status quo in season four, viewers might be excited to see more drama coming ahead for the loved-up couple.
Their relationship of late has been a far cry from the heady days of season one on the show, and the duo’s sex scenes have been much fewer and farther between.
But will the show go too far and tear the star-crossed lovers apart for good?
While the original book series’ author Diana Gabaldon has based her entire run on the married couple, the show‘s producers might decide to take things in another direction.
For one thing, actors Sam and Caitriona have been bound to the show since its beginning and might be looking to try new projects.
Could Brianna and Roger end up helming the series as time goes on?
Viewers know Jamie can’t travel through time so if Claire ends up stuck in the future for some reason it will be a truly tragic way to end their story after everything they’ve been through.
