Outlander season 5: Jamie Fraser twist revealed in major Claire Fraser plot detail

Outlander has seen the ages of leads Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) change dramatically over the seasons.

When the characters first meet in season one, Claire is 27 and she’s surprised to learn that Jamie is much younger at 22.

It doesn’t stop the couple from falling in love and pursuing their relationship, as they stay together for three rocky years before the Battle of Culloden rips them apart again.

The cross-century lovers are then separated for a heartbreaking 20 years.

After reuniting in season three, and now the duo have set up their new life in the Americas in season four, the parents are pushing 50.

But viewers may not realise that when Jamie and Claire first appeared on screen together, the Highlander was actually 25 – three years older than when they first meet.

And it’s all because Jamie’s “ghost” appeared to Claire in the very first episode before she’d even travelled through the Standing Stones.

It turns out, when Jamie watched Claire through the window of her Inn in Inverness, he was at a different stage of his life.

After much speculation from fans of the hit STARZ show, original novels’ author Diana Gabaldon eventually put them out of their misery and confirmed Jamie’s age once and for all.

Speaking as a guest on the Outlander Podcast in 2014, she revealed: “Sam Heughan asked me, and I hadn’t thought about it before.

“But I just answered him immediately,” she said. “He’s about 25.”

Could this mean the Jamie who appeared to Claire in the 20th Century was him having a brush with death at the Battle of Culloden, given he’d be about the right age at this time.

Recently, a new theory may have also hinted at the return of one incredibly unpopular character to the show.

Laoghaire (played by Nell Hudson) was last seen trying to shoot her ex-husband Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in explosive scenes in season four.

Furious with him for going back to Claire, Laoghaire ended up showing up Lallybroch with a pistol.

Luckily, surgeon Claire managed to patch up her husband and in the hope Laoghaire would leave them alone Jamie agreed to pay her the alimony.

But regardless of their attempts, the families will now forever be linked, and it’s all down to Marsali (Lauren Lyle).

When Jamie and Claire travelled to the Americas, Marsali hid in the boat so she could stay with her new love Fergus (Cesar Domboy).

Marsali and Fergus have since had a child, so it’s likely Laoghaire won’t be able to stay away from her family for long – will she return in season five?

Outlander season five returns to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video in 2020.
