I spoke to life coach Emma Mumford, who gives this advice on sensible spending to help you save even more pounds.

Using your head: Mindful spending is a positive way to look at your finances. Ask yourself, “Does it feel good to spend this money? Is that splurge going to make me feel happy for the month ahead?” If the answer is no, then put it back and wait. See how you feel another time, maybe when you next get paid.
Say it right: It is easy to fall into bad habits and use phrases such as, “I’m skint, I haven’t got any money this month” or ‘I’m terrible with money”. Get out of this habit. Switch to positive statements and if you can’t afford to do something, say, “I’m choosing not to spend any money at the moment, but thanks for inviting me.”

Get real: My top tip is to get real with your finances. Avoidance is the biggest cause of a negative relation- ship with your money. It’s easy to avoid looking at a bank balance and debts and many of us end up guessing at what we have left for the month. Work out how much debt you have, how much your bills are and how much you have in your bank account. You may be pleasantly surprised. Once you have clarity and acceptance of your situation you will feel more at ease within yourself.
