Oscars trend #BongHive is a Beyonce-inspired fandom of Parasite's Bong Joon-ho

South Korean film Parasite has become the first non-English-language movie to win the best picture Oscar, in a significant upset for British war film 1917.

The class satire by auteur Bong Joon-ho also won best director, best original screenplay and best international feature, leaving Sir Sam Mendes empty-handed.

The film has also ridden into Tinseltown on the back of a social media hashtag that celebrates the movie’s director.

It has meant that Bong has become a viral celebrity as #BongHive began trending with various memes being shared across the Internet.

It has been reported that the hashtag is a nod towards singer Beyonec’s dedicated group of superfans.

Writer-director Bong Joon-ho has an online following called the #BongHive

Before Bong arrived to scoop the 92nd Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, he has previously spoken about his surprise at those who have been idolising his work.

He said: “I haven’t seen the #BongHive myself, but my family and friends tell me about it.

“I am not on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. I don’t do any social media. It is too tiring. I’m 50 years old, and to have a devoted group of fans associated with me on social media like Beyoncé, who is one of the most amazing musicians and artists in the world – is something I never imagined. It’s incredible.”

The South Korean filmmaker had a fantastic night at the Oscars and appeared stunned to win the directing prize, saying: “After winning best international feature, I thought I was done for the day and ready to relax.”

Parasite won four Oscars for Bong Joon-ho

He quoted Martin Scorsese, saying: “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, ‘What is the most personal is the most creative’,” and asked the audience to stand in honour of the veteran director.

He added: “I will drink until next morning.”
