Oscars 2020: Tom Hanks leads cheers for 'Parasite' as the lights cut out during Best Picture win

It was a historic night for Bong Joon Jo’s Parasite at the Oscars last night, with the Korean drama winning four awards including Best Director, Original Screenplay, International Feature and Best Picture.

When Jane Fonda announced it as the winner of the final award of the night, the prestigious Best Picture, the cast and crew crowded the stage to accept the honour.

With dozens of people on stage and only a limited amount of time for everyone to speak, the organisers of the ceremony cut the lights and microphones slightly prematurely, much to the bemusement of the guests at the Dolby Theatre.

The cameras cut to front row guest Tom Hanks, Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie who led huge cheers of “up” to the organisers, waving their arms up and down, before the show relented, switching on the stage lights and allowing the cast to finish giving their speeches.

No-one is going to argue with Tom Hanks are they?

Hanks’ performance as TV presenters Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood, has been roundly praised by critics, but Pitt’s awards campaign was unstoppable and he was finally awarded his first acting Oscar after being nominated four times in 24 years.

Parasite was the first from South Korea to be nominated for an Oscar, and ended up leaving with four – including the top prizes of best picture and best director.
