The Oscars 2020 has become the least-watched ceremony in the show’s history, according to reports.

Deadline and Reuters have both stated that the 92nd Academy Awards, which took place on Sunday night, scored 23.6 million viewers – down from 20 per cent from 29.6 million viewers for last year’s awards. For the second year in a row, the ceremony went without a host.

The show’s viewership was also down from the previous record low of 26.5 million viewers in 2018.

This is despite the fact that the 91st Academy Awards, broadcast in 2019, had seen an increase in ratings for the first time in five years.

This year’s Oscars saw Parasite emerge as the big winners of the night, picking up four awards in total.

The Korean film won awards for the best original screenplay, best international film, best director and best picture on the night, making the first time a South Korean film has been honoured at the Academy Awards.

Parasite is also the first foreign language film to win the best picture award in the award ceremony’s history.

Joaquin Phoenix picked up the award for best actor for his role in The Joker – and used his acceptance speech as an opportunity to speak about ‘cow insemination’, as he made a plea for humans to stop fighting each other and to stop using the world’s only natural resources.

Also winning big on the night included British war film 1917, which picked up three awards for best cinematography, best sound mixing and best visual effects.

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt picked up a gong for best supporting actor for his role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, while Renee Zellweger won the award for best actress for her portrayal of Judy Garland in the biopic film Judy.

The ceremony was opened by a performance from Janelle Monae and Billy Porter, while Billie Eilish, Idina Menzel and Elton John also took to the stage.

Rapper Eminem also made a surprise appearance halfway through the show, with a performance of his song Lose Yourself – which won an Oscar for best original song back in 2003.
