Oscar Isaac addresses Batman role rumour

After a long and drawn-out back and forth between Ben Affleck and Warner Bros, the actor has finally called it quits with Matt Reeves’ planned DC feature, The Batman, which means that we’ll shortly be getting a brand new Batman, as the film is now aiming for a summer 2021 release date.

Who will it be? Not Armie Hammer, according to the Call Me By Your Name actor, although he is indeed keen to play the role. He recently told Jimmy Fallon that he’s had no contact with Warner Bros, but “Who wouldn’t want to be Batman? I think every guy in this audience would want to be Batman if they could. It’s a good gig.”

Along with Hammer, the internet has been excitedly discussing the possibility that the new Batman could be Star Wars’ Poe Dameron, aka the massively popular Oscar Isaac. But if Isaac is closing in on the role, it’s news to him, too.

In an interview with Metro about Netflix’s recent heist movie, Triple Frontier, in which he co-stars alongside Affleck – DC’s recently-departed Bruce Wayne – Isaac was asked point blank if the rumours are true that he’s in talks for the role of Batman in Reeves’ forthcoming take on the Dark Knight.

“No. I have only read it online like everyone else. I haven’t had any conversations about Batman, unfortunately, but I am sure it is going to be great. Matt Reeves is such a great director. Yeah, he can get my number.”

So, not currently in the running, but definitely up for it!

As it goes, both Hammer and Isaac may be a little old for the kind of Batman era Reeves wants to tackle. The Cloverfield director’s smaller noir detective tale is said to feature a much younger Bruce Wayne, aged just slightly older the one in Fox’s Gotham.

Meanwhile, as Warner Bros and DC start thinking about bringing back Batman in another incarnation, there are plenty of other DC movies in the pipeline, with Shazam! coming very soon, Joker arriving towards the end of the year, and Birds Of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 set for 2020. There’s also James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and Aquaman 2 and its darker spin-off, The Trench, in the works.

More on The Batman as it arrives.
