Oppo reveals Find X2 Pro smartphone fully charges in 38 minutes

Chinese phone brand Oppo has unveiled its Find X2 smartphone series complete with one of the best screens on the market and its super-fast charging tech.

The company was expected to unveil the new series at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona before the February-timed conference was cancelled due to fears regarding the global coronavirus outbreak.

Nevertheless, Oppo persisted with the reveal of its high-end phone series, the Find X2 and the Find X2 Pro.

The Pro is the more expensive of the two devices, coming in at a cool €1,199 (UK pricing is yet to be announced), with the price for the Find X2 at €999. It may sound like a lot for a phone company that’s still starting to grow in the UK – the company only launched in Britain last January – but Oppo hopes there’s enough bang for your buck with this device. “We want to show customers we’re a premium brand – we want the products to speak for themselves,” the company’s director of global marketing and brand strategy Michael Tran told the Standard

So how does the Find X2 series measure up? Both the Find X2 and the Pro variants have impressive screens, with a 6.7-inch 120 Hz display that refreshes the screen 120 times per minute, just like Samsung’s new S20 range. However, unlike Samsung’s phones, you can use this high-end refresh rate at the top resolution mode for the display so it boosts a smooth, clear and accurate screen. It also features a true one billion colour display, so bright colours really pop on the screen, and an AI adaptive eye protection system that is easy on your eyes depending on the brightness or darkness of your surroundings.

The HDR Video Enhancer promises to enhance the real-time HDR effect of videos on mainstream platforms, such as YouTube, to improve the picture via image enhancement algorithms.

The phones include 5G thanks to the addition of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 chip, this is one of the best series around to use to play games or watch films and TV shows, thanks to that screen quality. If you are yet to dive into 5G tech, then these devices are certainly ones to consider. “It’s about future-proofing yourself as the network evolves. We know consumers are holding onto phones a lot longer, up to 36 months. And by having this device, it is future-proofing yourself.”

The main difference between the two devices is down to the camera. The Pro boosts three rear lenses: 48MP wide lens, 48MP ultra wide angle lens and a 13MP periscope telephoto lens, similar to the one Huawei sported on last year’s P30 Pro. There’s 60x digital zoom too. The new Sony lenses will suppress the noise and enhance the clarity of night images in particularly, so it’s possible to capture images more accurately. An improved Ultra Steady Mode when filming will reduce shaky handy syndrome for amateur videographers, whilst you will be able to edit videos on the go with the Studio editing suite.

The Find X2, on the other hand, comes with two rear lenses, with Oppo choosing to drop the periscope lens. This does mean that the Find X2 has a slimmer camera profile on the back, which will certainly make it easy to lie flat on a table.

With Oppo, there is often a focus on the battery capabilities and the Find X2 series is no different. Thanks to its fast-charging tech, both devices will charge from nothing to 100 per cent in only 38 minutes. “We know that for consumers, a pain point is battery and the fear of running out. There’s also the concern with 5G that it’s going to consume your battery and drain in. What we’ve done is maximised it and put the hardware and software together,” said Tran.

The company has done this by splitting the battery into two, like you find on folding phones now, allowing the batteries to charge at the same time as well as being able to use whilst the phone is charging.

Both phones will sport Oppo’s version of Android 10, named ColorOS 7.1, which it collaborated with Google on to bring to its devices. It features a new lightweight design, new icon options, as well as the arrival of dark mode – yes, you can now use this on WhatsApp

The Find X2 Pro will be available with 12GB RAM and 512GB of storage, and in two colours: black ceramic and an orange vegan leather which looks better in real life than it sounds. The Find X2 also has 12GB of RAM but 256 GB of storage and has a glossy blue variant, instead of the orange leather version.

However, the devices won’t be on sale until May, with no set date yet. Is this due to coronavirus fears affecting the supply chain? “I wouldn’t say that it hasn’t impacted our business,” said Tran. “We’re taking those precautions. We also have production plans outside of China, but at the moment we’re monitoring it every day and making sure that everything is still on track.”

With Huawei’s star still constrained by the lack of access to Google’s services, it looks like Oppo is eyeing that competitive third slot in global smartphone sales and with the Find X2 Pro, it should be able to make an impact.
