Bowel problems can wreak havoc on your sex life.

A sizeable 20% of women battle digestive problems which leave them feeling self conscious in the bedroom.

Flatulence, bloating and constipation are some of the hurdles that can make intimacy feel uncomfortable.

A Healthista survey asked 1,600 British women to talk about their love lives.

Results showed that digestive issues were a cause for concern for one in five ladies aged between 25 and 65.

These participants admitted that bloating, wind and toilet troubles had prevented them from having sex in the past.

Some were concerned about letting rip in the sack, while others said their swollen bellies were a hindrance.

Dr Simon Smale commented on the research.

He told Healthlista: ”Women are often worried about the effect on of their gut symptoms on their relationships but I speak to their partners and they’re much less worried about any of that.

“Often, the men are more like, ‘Well, everybody farts. I fart, it’s certainly not a deal-breaker for me.

“We all strive for a sort of intimacy in our relationships and that is difficult for women when they’re worried about passing wind or that they might lose control of their bowels.”

If digestion issues are preventing you from getting jiggy, it could be worth talking to your partner about your concerns.

Breaking the taboo should help you to feel less nervous about farting.

Speaking to your partner about your health concerns may help you to feel less worried about experiencing flatulence during sex.

Booking an appointment with your local GP could also be beneficial.

Your doctor may refer you to a dietitian to help alleviate any bowel troubles.

They could also recommend psychological therapy or IBS medicine.
