On The Road With: The Sex Clinic host Sarah Mulindwa on frightening cliff walks and wild nights in New York

For this week’s On the Road, we chat with Sarah Mulindwa.

The host of Channel 4’s The Sex Clinic talks about a trip to Jamaica for a friend’s wedding, her favourite city, tackling an hour-long cliffside hike with a fear of heights and sleeping in her sister’s garden in New York after a wild night out.

What is your favourite on-the-road moment?

A trip to Jamaica. We went for a friend’s wedding and stayed in the gorgeous Hilton’s Rose Hall Resort & Spa in Montego Bay (rooms from £187). Montego Bay is beautiful and lives up to expectations but we wanted to see the real Jamaica, hang out where the locals do and get an all-round experience.

We hired a bus and went on an excursion to Dunn’s River Falls and Park, an amazing waterfall near Ocho Rios, followed by a trip to Brown’s Town for a slice of authentic Jamaican life, and then a stop-off at 56 Hope Road, Kingston, Bob Marley’s former house (tours from £17.60).

I’m a big fan, having listened to his music growing up through my dad.

And your favourite city?

Kampala. Uganda is the most ethnically diverse country in the world. Every day feels like a Friday. It’s an incredibly sociable city and is ranked in the top five cities in Africa for nightlife.

If you appreciate art, you’ll fall in love with the Casa de Roy Champagne bar. It’s decorated in fine art, afro-inspired handmade antiques and some of the most beautiful arts and crafts.

When have you been most frightened while travelling?

Bali, in Indonesia. We spent three days on Nusa Penida Island and visiting Kelingking Beach was high on our to-do list.

The secluded beach is down a rugged, 400-metre cliffside hike, which takes an hour to walk down and two hours to climb back up.

I have a fear of heights but mustered the courage to do it — but I was ill-prepared and underestimated how physically challenging and scary it would be.

The only security you have is a rope so one wrong step could be fatal. It was one of the scariest and stupidest things I’ve done but the view and beach is arguably the most spectacular thing you will ever see.

What has been your most life-changing experience while travelling?

Visiting the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. It covers about 19,000 square metres and you can immerse yourself in the structure from all sides, day and night.

It’s on a slight slope and its wavelike form is different wherever you stand.

We’ve studied the history but to see the memorial was very emotional, especially accompanied by information on the victims.

Where’s the strangest place you’ve spent the night?

My sister’s backyard in New York. She lives in Queens, and me and my cousin went out in Manhattan.

We were only meant to be out for the day but ended up staying out until 2am. It took two hours to get home.

To avoid waking up my heavily pregnant sister, we threw stones at the window of the room my mum was staying in but she didn’t wake up, so we pulled out the deck chairs in the garden and called it a night.

I couldn’t sleep — it was scorching hot and I was paranoid a coyote would attack me. The night out in Manhattan was worth it, though.

Where are you going next?

I want to visit Australia. I have friends in practically every city and family in Melbourne.

The thought of a 24-hour flight sounds like hell but if I made it to Bali, I can make it down under.
