Olly Robbins QUITS – shock resignation announced during Tory leadership hustings

Mr Robbins’ departure was announced during Jeremy Hunt’s time on stage at the hustings event in the north. The audience erupted with cheers at the news, which was announced by Mr Hunt’s interviewer. Mr Hunt said: “I wasn’t a believer in the backstop, I didn’t believe it would get through Parliament.”

He then added: “It’s a good move to change our approach.”

Mr Robbins’ resignation comes a month after current Prime Minister Mrs May’s that saw her in tears and declaring her love for the county on the steps of No10.

News the 44-year-old has resigned came during a questions and answers segment of the hustings event that saw Mr Hunt and Boris Johnson go head-to-head for Mrs May’s role.

Mr Robbins has been heavily involved in the Brexit process.

He is also said to have been a key part of Mrs May’s decision-making process during negotiations.

His departure follows a public shaming by leading Brexit supporter Peter Bone last month.

Mr Bone ripped into Mr Robbins after it was revealed in the BBC’s ‘Brexit: Behind Closed Doors’ that the Remainer begged for Belgian citizenship for after Britain leaves the bloc.

Mr Bone, the Conservative MP for Wellingborough, said: “I wonder if the excellent Secretary of State has had an opportunity to watch ‘Brexit: Behind Closed Doors’. It is hidden away by the BBC on BBC4.

“But, it is quite a revealing programme sir, because in it, the lead negotiator for our exit from the European Union, Olly Robbins, who I think is in Brussels this week, says because he has done such rotten deal, he can’t come back to the United Kingdom and is applying for Belgian citizenship.

“Is that appropriate Secretary of State?”

The Brexit Secretary replied by admitting, despite seeing clips of the documentary, he had not seen the full show.

In the documentary which aired on the BBC, Brexit Coordinator for the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, claimed Olly Robbins asked him to grant him Belgian citizenship at the end of the Brexit negotiations.

Mr Robbins was also allegedly overheard in February by ITV News Correspondent Angus Walker revealing there would be a “lengthy” delay to Brexit.

This, as the UK has now found out, is the April 12-October 31 delay.
