Olivier Giroud has suggested he could still leave Chelsea this summer despite the Blues’ announcing his contract extension this week.

Giroud’s deal was set to expire at the end of June with AC Milan and West Ham United among the clubs said to be interested in signing the France international.

Chelsea confirmed on Friday that an option to extend Giroud’s contract by one year was exercised in April.

Giroud however has suggested the announcement is unlikely to prevent him finding a new club this summer, hinting his preference is a move to Milan.

‘I want to make it clear that Chelsea reactivated the clause in April and they recently announced it to comply with Premier League rules,’ Giroud said when asked whether the extension affected his hopes to leave the club this summer.

‘It’s fair to remember that I liked [Milan legends] Marco van Basten and Andriy Shevchenko.

‘Milan are a big club and one of the great teams in Europe.

‘But, today, I will not talk about my future at the club because I am focused on the France team and the Euros, which is fast approaching.’

Since joining from Arsenal in 2018, Giroud has scored 39 goals in 119 appearances for Chelsea.

The 34-year-old has also won the FA Cup, the Europa League and now the Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge but started just 12 games in all competitions during the 2020-21 season.
