Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Grease’ leather costume is up for auction

We all remember the scene in Grease where Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) surprises Danny (John Travolta) with her epic transformation from demure cheerleader to sexed-up skin-tight leather-wearing Grease Lightning girl.

The black leather jacket and pair of figure-hugging black shiny high-waisted trousers (that were so tight that Newton-John had to be sewn into them) is an outfit that’s been mimicked for many a sexy fancy dress outfit since Grease first came out in 1978.

And now, Grease fans have a chance to get their hands on the original costume, as Olivia Newton-John prepares to auction off the jacket and trousers in an upcoming auction that will benefit the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre. The pieces are estimated to sell for between $100,000 and $200,000

The four-time Grammy award-winning singer and Hollywood film star is working with Julien’s Auctions to auction over 500 of her film and television costumes, gowns, personal items and accessories on November 1 and 2 at The Standard Oil Building in Beverly Hills and online at juliensauctions.com.

Newton-John, who has sold 100 million records worldwide, will also be auctioning the original script for “Grease” along with the custom-made 1950s inspired petal pink point d’esprit lace gown she wore to the 1978 premiere of Grease (estimate: $3,000-$5,000) and a custom “Pink Ladies” jacket presented to Newton-John by the cast and crew of Grease (estimate: $2,000-$4,000).

“Julien’s Auctions is honored to present this auction event celebrating one of pop music’s greatest talents and treasured icons, Olivia Newton-John,” said Martin Nolan, Executive Director of Julien’s Auctions. “Her extraordinary career – that includes her starring role in Grease, one of the most successful Hollywood films and soundtracks of all time – and her recordings of some of the biggest pop singles of the 20th Century, makes her more than just a star but a pop culture phenomenon.”

Other pieces being auctioned include Newton-John’s custom, thigh-high suede Western boots and Missoni knit harem pants from the 1980 fantasy film, “Xanadu.” She is also offering up the custom silk bodice worn on the cover of her 1982 “Physical” tour book and a ribbed velvet and gold lame top and shorts worn on an episode of “The Merv Griffin Show” in 1981.

Newton-John herself will be taking the stage for the Julien’s Auction in Los Angeles, which will start out the auctioneer’s Icons & Idols two-day music event taking place on Nov. 1 and 2.
