Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham-Carter and other stars have got a number one with their Children In Need charity album, despite removal from the main chart by the Official Charts Company.

The Children In Need: Got It Covered album features celebrities covering hit songs from artists including Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Stevie Wonder, but was removed from the album chart battle without any notice.

Despite rocketing up the album charts, it was moved from the main chart into the ‘compilation albums’ chart by the Official Charts Company.

BBC bosses were left disappointed after the release was quietly pulled from the main album chart, with BBC Children In Need’s chief executive Simon Antrobus saying: ‘I’m deeply saddened that the industry has chosen to pull the album from the number one race after announcing it was well on its way to securing the top spot this week.’

Children In Need: Got It Covered was the best-selling record of the week, but an Official Charts Company spokesperson didn’t reveal the reason why it had been changed over.

They said: ‘We understand and sympathise with Children In Need’s concerns that their album will no longer feature in the UK’s artist albums chart.’

It still made the number one spot on the compilation chart after the unexpected change – so stars including Olivia, Helena, David Tenant, Luke Evans and more are chart-topping singers, too.

The album consists of Helena Bonham-Carter singing Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell, Jim Broadbent taking on Blue Moon by Rogers and Hart, Jodie Whittaker covering Yellow by Coldplay and Olivia Colman singing Portishead’s Glory Box.

Shaun Dooley sings Never Grow Up by Taylor Swift, Luke Evans covers Charlie Chaplin’s Smile, Suranne Jones takes on Symphony by Clean Bandit and Adrian Lester sings I Wish by Stevie Wonder.

Himesh Patel covers All These Things That I’ve Done by The Killers, David Tennant sings Sunshine On Leith by The Proclaimers and the album also has a special group cover of It Must Be Love by Labi Siffre.
