Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's challenge to Anthony Martial after giving him Man Utd No.9 shirt

Anthony Martial has been told he needs to score more goals by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Martial could return from injury against Liverpool on Saturday after almost two months on the sidelines.

The French international’s last match came in the defeat to Crystal Palace , having scored twice in United’s matches before then.

Martial has won back the United No.9 shirt following Romelu Lukaku’s exit and upon doing so, was told by Solskjaer he needed to add more goals to his tally.

“Now that I’ve taken the no.9 shirt back once again, all he [Ole] has said to me is that I have a lot of responsibility and that I have to score goals, so that’s what I am trying to do,” Martial told United Review.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shakes hands with Anthony Martial

“We all prefer beautiful goals but, at the end of the day, a goal is still a goal.

“So, if I could score 30 goals like I scored in the game against Chelsea , I would take that right now!

”I guess I have tended to score quite nice goals and so, if I managed to score more of this kind of goal, in addition to the more spectacular ones, then I’d end up with a much higher goals total come the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, pundit Jermaine Jenas has claimed Solskjaer should have let Martial go instead of Romelu Lukaku.

Anthony Martial of Manchester United celebrates

“Since Martial has been at Manchester United , I would say he has a month and a half, two months a season then he goes absolutely missing,” he said.

“You’ve got poor Marcus Rashford, who puts himself out there every single week and gives his all. We all know he’s not a goalscoring machine or that goal-scoring comes naturally to him.

“Why get rid of Lukaku when you’ve got someone like Martial who is doing that every week.”
