Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned Anthony Martial he expects more from him in the remainder of the season.

The Frenchman capped off an impressive week for the Red Devils with his third goal in as many matches during a 3-0 win against Watford on Sunday.

The former Monaco man is highly thought of at Old Trafford but his demeanour and attitude has often drawn criticism.

Solskjaer insists he is Martial’s biggest critic and though he is happy with the Frenchman’s form, he wants more from him in Marcus Rashford’s absence.

‘I am delighted with the week Anthony has had,’ said Solskjaer. Solskjaer said. “He has got his critics and I am one of his biggest, priobably. I keep demanding different stuff from him.

“But this week he has come up with a number nine centre forward’s goal – a header – against Chelsea. He did everything to get the goal against Brugge; defending, winning the ball, running through.

“And this today is the Anthony we know more about. The skill is just mind-blowing, sometimes the skills he shows. But I want more from him and I’ll keep on at him.’

Solskjaer made the bold decision to leave Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard out of the matchday squad to face the Hornets.

The arrivals of Odion Ighalo and Bruno Fernandes has bolstered United’s squad and Solskjaer says he wants to see ‘more’ from those who are on the fringes of the side.

‘We picked a squad of 18 that we felt covered all bases today,’ Solskjaer added.

‘Starting 11, two defenders, two midfielders and two forwards [on the bench] – a wide man and a striker – that was the decision made.

‘The whole team didn’t play really well against Brugge, we can only be better on Thursday [in the return leg]. There is more and more competition for places, so of course your standard has to improve. That is what I am saying about Anthony as well; I want more from him. It’s not just the ones who aren’t playing – I want more from everyone.

‘We need to be more consistent and we need to kick on. This week has been a good one.’
