Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged to let Paul Pogba go by former Man Utd star

Manchester United “should not stop” Paul Pogba from leaving the club this summer, according to former Red Devils midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Pogba has been heavily linked with a move away from the Premier League club amid reported interest from the Juventus , who sold the midfielder to United for £89 million in 2016, and Real Madrid .

The France international has also indicated his desire to leave Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old spoke of looking for “a new challenge” in June before his agent Mino Raiola told The Times that the player wants to leave.

Although United are reluctant to sell their star player, Schweinsteiger, who played with Pogba at Old Trafford, insisted that the club should only look to keep players who are fully committed.

“If a player wants to leave the club, you shouldn’t stop him,” the 34-year-old told BBC Sport .

He added: “You need players who are 100% into the club and care about the club, that’s the only way you can survive at the top level and have success.

“Paul is a great player, he is just looking for a team where he can play the same style that he does with the France national team, so if you give him that kind of team around him, he would be happy at United.”

Schweinsteiger joined the Red Devils from German giants Bayern Munich in 2015 and spent two years at Old Trafford before heading to current club Chicago Fire.

The former German international had a difficult spell with the Premier League club, making 35 appearances and scoring just twice before his switch to the MLS.

Since his departure in 2017, United have struggled to return to their former glories and are undergoing several changes after a disappointing campaign which saw the club finish sixth in the Premier League.

It also saw former boss Jose Mourinho, who Schweinsteiger worked with during his time at Old Trafford, replaced by Solskjaer in December.

“I’m glad they have re-started their team and the way they play,” he continued.

“It’s about time because United is a huge club with amazing supporters and they have players in the squad who can really be dangerous.

“They should play a nice way of football and I really hope that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lets the team play to their abilities and as far as I can see, he has done a good job.

“I would really like to see them win [the Premier League].”

The German also outlined his belief that Solskjaer is the best man for the job, adding: “When you become the manager of a big club for the first time, it can’t always be up, it also goes down. It’s normal.

“I think he really understands how the team has to play football and as far as I can see and I have talked to some players, they are really happy with him.

“They have fantastic players, you just need to use them.”
