Paul Merson thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ‘under severe pressure’ to save his Manchester United job and this weekend’s game against Everton is his ‘biggest game in management’.

United have suffered back-to-back losses to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir and face a tricky trip to Goodison Park to face fourth-placed Everton.

Speculation is rife that defeat could bring an end to Solskjaer’s reign as Manchester United manager, with Mauricio Pochettino touted as the man to replace him.

Pochettino, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton manager, featured as a guest on Monday Night Football to analyse Leicester’s 4-1 win over Leeds and Merson thinks his presence won’t be doing Solskjaer any favours.

‘I think Solskjaer will be under severe pressure,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘I really do. Let’s be honest, this is Manchester United. This is, for me, the biggest club in the world of football.

‘Where they are in the league is not acceptable. It’s not like it’s two or three games gone. And it’s not just that, it’s the performances.

‘The performances have been poor. The way they capitulated against TottenhamArsenal weren’t great the other day, they just did a job. They looked lost.

‘They’ve gone against, let’s be honest, not a top European team and they’ve been beaten.

‘I think it’ll be Solskjaer’s – if he gets to Saturday – biggest game in management.

‘If he gets to Saturday. Pochettino was on Sky on Monday.

‘People want to be seen. Managers come on Sky and people go, “Oh Pochettino! I forgot Pochettino was out of a job”. They do.

‘I’m not saying Manchester United do but people do and fans do and it gets going.

‘I think come what Saturday, if he’s still in the job, will be the biggest game of his managerial career so far.’
