Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sensed his Manchester United sidewere ‘stressed’ during a calamitous first-half display against West Ham.

The visitors to the London stadium were fortunate to be trailing only to Tomas Soucek’s 38th minute opener after the Hammers totally dominated proceedings and missed several opportunities to extend their advantage with Pablo Fornals and Sebastian Haller particularly culpable.

United, however, have made a habit of coming from behind this season and Solskjaer’s half-time team talk, during which he implored his side to keep calm, yielded dividends.

‘You’ve got to keep composed,’ said the United manager when asked how he inspired his side’s latest comeback win.

‘We put a few things right that were wrong first and we tweaked a little bit the tactics and formation and balance of the team.

‘The biggest thing was to clear our heads because it seemed that after they scored we never got into our rhythm and we got stressed.

‘It was just needing to calm everyone down and stick to our guns and believe in ourselves. We’ve shown that so many times.’

As well as his words of wisdom, it was Solskjaer’s decision to bring on Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes at the start of the second period which helped turn the game on its head.

Both players were hugely influential after the interval with Fernandes creating eight goalscoring opportunities and Rashford sealing the three points with a tidy finish 12 minutes from time.

‘You have a duty to be ready when you are called upon,’ added Solskjaer. ‘Bruno [Fernandes] and Marcus [Rashford] came on and did well. First half we had loads of possession but we didn’t go anywhere with the ball.

‘Second half we stretched them more and ran in behind. The quality was much better, The goals were exceptional. Mason [Greenwood] is a great finisher. We are just waiting for his season to get started. He is getting fitter.

‘The first goal as well was top quality from Paul Pogba. Concentration, head and knee over the ball. I am so happy for him.’
