Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used his programme notes to praise the recruitment strategy that means Harry Maguire will wear red not blue when Manchester United meet Leicester City this afternoon.

Maguire will face his former club for the first time since making his £80million move to Old Trafford over the summer, part of a concerted effort at United to sign young, British talent.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also brought in full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Wales winger Daniel James in a spending spree that totalled nearly £150million.

However, the club have been criticised for failing to appoint a director of football despite repeated efforts to do so, but Solskjaer has insisted the current set-up is doing the job required.

‘One of the major positives has been the performances of our new signings, who have been brilliant,’ Solskjaer wrote.

‘That shows our recruitment is working.’

He added: ‘We are at the start of a journey for this club.

‘We have a plan, we know where we want to go and while there will be highs and lows along the way there will be more highs than lows and we’ll get there together.’

Despite being the cheapest of the three summer signings, James has hit the ground running the fastest of any of them.

He has already scored three league goals in four appearances for the club in the Premier League, form that Solskjaer joked might damage his chances of playing more.

He said: ‘James is one goal off equalling my record of scoring in three consecutive league games?

‘He’ll only play the first minute and he’s off!

‘You can see the potential. When you’re scouting him, when I spoke to Giggsy, I’m not surprised

‘He’s [James] got that X factor with his pace, explosivity in and around the box, he’s been practising right foot, left foot and he’ll score more goals.’
