Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was gushing with praise for Marcus Rashford after it was announced the striker would be awarded an honorary doctorate for his charity work.

The 22-year-old becomes the youngest ever recipient of the honour from The University of Manchester, which has previously given such awards to Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rashford has been recognised for his work with the charity FareShare, helping raise £20million which has funded four million meals for vulnerable children during lockdown.

The United forward also forced a government U-turn over free school meals and his manager was glowing with pride when he discussed the news on Wednesday.

‘We’re so proud of Marcus,’ said the Norwegian. ‘I’ve said it a few times, but he’s a great person and great human being.

‘He cares about so much more than himself and the work he’s done shows he cares so much more about others than himself.

‘So, very proud of him and hopefully he’ll keep his personality for the rest of his life, just keep on being yourself.’

Speaking about the honorary doctorate, Rashford himself said: ‘It’s a proud day for myself and my family. When you look at the great names that have been awarded this doctorate in the past, it’s humbling.

‘We still have a long way to go in the fight to combat child poverty in this country but receiving recognition from your city means we are heading in the right direction and that means a lot. Thank you to The University of Manchester.’

As well as his work off the pitch, Rashford continues to thrive on the pitch, netting his 16th Premier League goal of the season last time out against Southampton as United push for a place in the Champions League.
